Close to home, and further out

Being nearby is worth something real on this kind of work. A shorter drive means we can get to an estimate quickly, and it means coming back to look at something is a small thing rather than a scheduling problem. Essex County is where that applies most.

Beyond that, we take work across the state. Tar and chip, oil and stone and chipseal in particular bring us calls from well outside Essex County, because relatively few New Jersey contractors offer them.

What New Jersey does to a driveway

This state is hard on exterior work in a specific way, and it is worth understanding if you are choosing between quotes.

Freeze and thaw. Our winters cross the freezing point repeatedly rather than staying cold. Every crossing is another cycle of water getting into a surface, expanding, and levering it apart. A single deep freeze is gentler on a driveway than a January that keeps changing its mind.

Road salt. Salt gets tracked up every driveway in the state from December onward. It attacks concrete and unsealed asphalt, and it is one of the strongest arguments for sealing a driveway on a sensible schedule.

The ground itself. Soil varies a lot across northern New Jersey, and clay holds water in a way that sandier ground does not. The same patio specification is not right everywhere, which is the main reason we look at the ground before quoting rather than pricing by the square foot.

Mature trees. Older Essex County neighborhoods have large established trees, which are lovely and are also a root problem under a driveway. That gets designed around rather than discovered halfway through.

Distance and the second visit

The reason we are straight about where we work is the second visit. Most jobs need one at some point, whether that is dropping back to check how a surface has cured, looking at something a customer has noticed, or finishing a detail once the ground has settled. A contractor two towns away treats that as a short errand. A contractor two hours away treats it as a problem to schedule.

So if you are outside our usual range, call and ask anyway. If it is a job we can do properly at that distance we will take it, and if it is not, we will tell you that rather than quote it and hope.
