Why there is no price per square foot on this page
You can find contractors who will quote a driveway over the phone. What they are really doing is pricing an average job and then finding the difference once the machines are on site, which is where change orders come from.
Two driveways of exactly the same size can differ substantially in price. What separates them is underneath and around them, and it is worth knowing what those factors are before you compare any two quotes.
What moves the number
| Factor | Why it matters |

| Ground conditions | Soft fill, clay or a high water table means deeper excavation and more stone. This is the single biggest variable and the one you cannot see. |
| Access | A driveway a machine can reach costs less than one where material is barrowed through a side gate. Access changes labor more than any other factor. |
| Removal and disposal | Taking out an old surface, and getting it off site, is real cost. Concrete removal costs more than asphalt. |
| Drainage | If water currently collects somewhere, it has to be dealt with. Building over a drainage problem guarantees a callback. |
| Size and shape | Square areas are efficient. Curves, tight corners and obstacles mean more cutting and more waste. |
| Materials | Paver and stone choice is a genuine range. It affects price, and it affects the look far more. |
| Edges and detail | A cobble or paver border, a medallion inlay or a soldier course is labor. It is also usually the detail people notice most. |
| Permits | Some municipalities take an interest in drainage, curb cuts and wall heights. We check your town before quoting. |
How to compare quotes properly
If you are getting several prices, and you should, the useful question is not what it costs. It is what is underneath.
- How deep is the excavation, and what is being removed
- How much stone base, and is it going in as compacted layers or one lift
- Where is the water going after the job
- What restrains the edges
- What is specifically excluded
A price that is dramatically lower than the others is usually lower for a reason, and the reason is normally one of the five points above. Ask each contractor those questions and the cheap quote tends to explain itself.
